Deeper Understanding of Natural Disaster

Instrumental for Disaster Mitigation (UND) - Enhancing disaster risk reduction capacity in Asia through innovative simulation services and regional collaboration

Learn More

Project Overview

The UND project aims to enhance disaster risk reduction capacity in Asia by utilizing a "deeper understanding" approach and innovative simulation services. Recognizing the Asia-Pacific's high vulnerability to natural disasters intensified by climate change, the project integrates regional and global initiatives like EGI and APAN Disaster Mitigation Working Group (DMWG).

Mission

Build capacity and disseminate deeper knowledge of disaster mitigation in Asia through advanced numerical simulations and collaborative research.

Approach

Systematic e-Science driven methodology to discover physical mechanisms behind natural disaster events for more accurate predictions.

Network

Fostering open collaboration over the TEIN network with partners across 8 Asian countries and European institutions.

3 SDG Goals

Key Activities

Tsunami & Storm Surge Studies

Developing innovative simulation models for events like Typhoon Haiyan and conducting tsunami impact analysis in the Indian Ocean region.

Forest Fire & Dust Transportation

Using WRF simulation to understand air pollutant transportation and identify fire characteristics across Indochina.

Flood Analysis

Identifying mechanisms governing disastrous rainfall and simulating impacts in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Myanmar.

Cloud-based Simulation Services

Supporting case studies by enabling partners to reproduce simulations and access data via the TEIN network.

Key Outcomes

Enhanced Capacity Building

Partners acquired skills to reproduce hazard event lifecycles using simulation facilities and apply numerical tools for new case studies.

Successful Case Studies

Numerous case studies on tsunami, storm surge, typhoon, flood, forest fire, and dust transportation were conducted with accurate simulations.

Training & Workshops

Successfully hosted training events and workshops, engaging local user communities and disseminating knowledge.

Open Collaboration Framework

Demonstrated a scalable distributed collaboration framework for disaster mitigation over the TEIN network.
